The Panorama Museum opened on 14th September 1989 and during the political reunification of Germany became part of the newly set up free state of Thuringia and was temporarily operated by the state. Temporarily because even in 1990 the free state had decided not to maintain its own regional institutions.

In August 2006 the sponsorship association “Panorama Museum e.V.” was set up. The seven members of the association were the Thuringia culture ministry, the Kyffhäuserkreis, the cities of Bad Frankenhausen and Sondershausen, as well as three private individuals - Michael Plote, culture journalist, Peter Hengstermann and Gerd Lindner, Directors of the Panorama Museum. The chairman is Peter Hengstermann and the deputy chairman is Matthias Strejc, Mayor of the town of Bad Frankenhausen.

The association has been responsible for the Panorama Museum since 1st January 2008. In the future, all of the financing will be borne by the free state. This has been ensured by means of a financial agreement with the association. However, the museum’s furnishings and collection remain in the possession of the region. The association’s task is to further anchor the museum in the region, as well as continuing the work undertaken so far, and strengthening its position as a nationally significant, effective cultural institution.
